BOEING 727 HISTORY

The 727 was produced following the success of the Boeing 707 quad-jet airliner. Designed for short- haul routes, the 727 became a mainstay of airlines’ domestic route networks. A stretched variant, the 727-200, debuted in 1967. In August 2008, there were a total of 81 Boeing 727-100 aircraft and 419 727-200 aircraft in airline service.

The Boeing 727 is an American mid-size, narrow-body, three-engine, T-tailed commercial jet airliner. The first Boeing 727 flew in 1963 and for over a decade it was the most produced commercial jet airliner in the world. When production ended in 1984, a total of 1,831 aircraft had been produced.

The first production model was known as the 727-100. The first 727- 100 flew on February 9, 1963 and FAA type approval was awarded on December 24 of that year. The first delivery to United Airlines was made prior to this on October 29, to allow pilot training to commence. The first 727 passenger service was flown by Eastern Air Lines on February 1, 1964, between Miami, Florida, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A total of 571 727-100s were delivered (407 -100s, 53 -100Cs, and 111 -100QCs). One 727-100 was completed and retained by Boeing, bringing total production to 572.

BOEING 747 PAN AM HISTORY

On January 21 1970, the world’s first widebody commercial flight Pan Am flew a Boeing 747 from New York to London Heathrow. Pan Am was the first customer for the Jumbo Jet and played a major role in the emergence of this aircraft type. In total Pan Am operated 65 Boeing 747-100′s, -200s and -SPs. The picture shows two Jumbo Jets in different liveries at Frankfurt Rhein/Main Airport, where the airline operated a big hub during many years.

Pan Am was a real aviation pioneer. It was founded in 1927 in the Key West as Pan American Airways by Juan Terry Trippe. Pan Am’s first activity was flying mail between Key West and Havana. With the arrival of a Fokker F.7 it started a passenger service on the same route in January 1928.

During the 1930s flying boats played a major role in the expansion of Pan Am. Flying boats were used for example to start services to South America, over the Pacific and over the Atlantic Ocean.

Pan Am developed as a mostly international airline. It lacked a large domestic network like American, Delta and United had. This meant that Pan Am couldn’t compete effectively with these airlines when they started intercontinental services after US deregulation in 1979. To rise money the airline sold its Pacific routes to United Airlines and the transatlantic services to Delta.

On 21 December 1988 PanAm 747 ‘Clipper Maid of the Seas’ was blown up in the air by a terrorist bomb when it flew over Lockerbie in Scotland on its way from London Heathrow to New York. In that disaster 270 people died, including 11 inhabitants of Lockerbie. Pan Am didn’t survive this final blow. In December 1991 the airline stopped flying and that marked the end of one of the proudest airline histories in the world.

HISTORY OF THE DC-7 PAN AMERICAN

The DC-7 is an American aircraft built by Douglas Aircraft company in 1953 to 1958 and was the last major piston engine powered transport of Douglas.

The early DC-7s were only sold to US carriers. The extended range variant of the DC-7, the DC-7C “Seven Seas” was released by the Douglas Aircraft since European carriers could not take advantage of the small range increase in the early DC-7.

Pan American Airlines used the DC-7C aircraft to inaugurate the first non-stop New York-London service. Pan Am flew the DC-7Cs for only two and and a half years before entering the jet age. The DC-7 is the largest propeller transport aircraft that Pan Am has ever used. The DC-7C was also used by several other overseas airlines’ fleets. In 1959, Douglas began converting DC-7A and DC-7C aircraft into DC-7F freighters, extending the life of the aircraft past its viability as a passenger transport.

SIKORSKY S-42 PAN AMERICAN HISTORY

The American Sikorsky S-42 is regarded as the first truly American seaplane and was based on the earlier Sikorsky S-40. It was described as the “most beautiful aircraft of its time.”

Igor Sikorsky and Charles Lindbergh, both consultants of Pan American Airways consultant at that time, laid out plans for a new and larger flying boat. During the inaugural flight of the S-40 on November 19, 1931, the two visionaries began preliminary sketches on the back of a menu in the S-40′s lounge. The Pan American President, Juan Trippe, had a similar vision of an aircraft that could span oceans. The new design provided for an increased lifting capacity, permitting to carry fuel for a 2,500 mile nonstop flight against a 30 mile-an-hour, at a cruising speed far in excess of the average operating speed of any flying boat at that time.

The S-42′s maiden flight was on March 30, 1934 and was also known as the Flying Clipper and the Pan Am Clipper. On October 10, 1931, the first S-40 was delivered to Pan Am and was flown to the Anacostia Naval Air Station at Washington D.C., christened by Mrs. Herbert Hoover.

There’s a total of ten S-42s built and manufactured by the Vought- Sikorsky Aircraft Division of the United Aircraft Corporation in Stratford, Connecticut.

S-42 has crew capacity for four. It has a maximum speed of 188 mph and a range of 1,930 miles. All Sikorsky S-42s were either scrapped or destroyed in accidents.

MARTIN M-130 CHINA CLIPPER HISTORY:

The Martin M-130 is a rare but influential plane that was designed and built by the Glenn L. Martin Company.

The M-130′s maiden flight was on December 30, 1934. On November 22, 1935, the China Clipper, piloted by Captain Edwin C. Musick and First Officer R.O.D. Sullivan flew the first trans-Pacific airmail route. Their range and capacity made them prime candidates to fulfill the over ocean hauling needs of the military during World War. In 1942, the two remaining planes were impressed into transport roles for the U Navy. In 1943, a crash occurred when the Phlippine Clipper hit the side of a mountain as it descended to land in San Francisco and the final M-130 casualty was the China Clipper NC14716, after it was wrecked at Port of Spain.

The M-30 is an all-metal flying boat employing streamlined aerodynamics and powerful engines to achieve Pan Am’s specifications for range and payload.

HISTORY OF THE BOEING 314 DIXIE CLIPPER

The Boeing 314 “Clipper” is a long-range flying boat produced between 1938 and 1941 by the Boeing Airline Company. It is one of the largest aircraft at that time using the massive wing of earlier XB-15 bomber prototype.

The Boeing 314 uses a series of heavy ribs and spars, creating a strong fuselage and cantilevered wing. It incorporates sponsons into the hull structure. The Pan Am Clippers were built for luxury, a necessity given the long duration of transoceanic flights.

Pan American World Airways signed a contract for six Boeing 314 on July 21, 1936. The first 314, the Honolulu Clipper, entered service in January 1939. Pacific Clipper was enroute to New Zealand during the outbreak of war in the Pacific. In June 24, 1939, the Yankee Clipper had flown across the Atlantic on a route from Southampton to New York with intermediate stops at Foynes, Ireland, Botwood, Newfoundland and Shediac, New Brunswick.

The Boeing 314 Dixie Clipper is another aircraft operated by Pan Am. It started its transatlantic passenger service in 1939 and was later sold to World Airways. It was scrapped on 1950.
